An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from inside knowledge of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the hours before Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been seized.

A particular user, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in betting activity just before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on inside information," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other traders also made tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Emerges

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on recently aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
