Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a military coup in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of his move to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The police intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
